A note from DemocracyFest:

I wanted to post these comments here because I found out about DemocracyFest in April on truthandhope.org

And I got to gush at Eugene on Saturday of the Democracyfest conference! When things felt bad at the end of January for the Dean campaign, truthandhope.org really made me realize there are other ways we could make a difference.I got to thank Howard Dean on Sunday.

I am not sure he knows exactly what I was thanking him for, although I tried to explain it as best I could in the limited amount of time I had. I don't know if he realizes how much it meant to me to thank him and tell him a little bit about why I wanted to thank him, but here is the story.

This weekend was Democracyfest. When I first heard about the conference my reaction was "wow - that's my birthday weekend! I can get to see Howard Dean on my birthday." It promised to be a chance to met with other people who had worked on the Dean campaign, but also to met with other progressive activists and get a chance to learn and improve skills to keep the progressive movement in the democratic party rolling ahead.

So I signed up for the conference and volunteered to do some helping out too. Through various trials and tribulations, I managed to make it to the conference. The training sessions - largely done by Latinos for America - were excellent. The socializing during the weekend was wonderful.

When Sunday came, I had very little voice (I've been struggling with a sinus infection for over two weeks and I keep getting laryngitis). I was a little bummed on Sunday because some things I had hoped would happen didn't, we weren't able to get together with friends we hoped to see, and well, sometimes birthdays can be a little overwhelming (especially being away from family and most of my friends.)

All I knew is that I wanted to get my picture with Howard Dean as my birthday present. As the time before Howard Dean's speech got closer, the chances of getting to see him seemed to be fading. If I wanted to physically see him speak, I would have to stand for a long period of time (very difficult for me, due to arthritis and fibromyalgia). It was hot. There was a large level of disorganization on that day, which was throwing a sense of chaos into the air. But Howard Dean did arrive and spoke on-time.

The speech was great. It motivated us to work to continue to support progressive candidates for all positions: school board, state legislature, at all levels of our local and state governments. As always it was a reminder that we have the power to enact change.

There had been (at some point) a plan for a place where Howard Dean could sit and sign autographs, etc. But as you can image for a conference which was initially titled "DeanFest" Howard Dean was mobbed the second he stopped speaking.

I went around to were I thought the Governor would be signing autographs. But no, he was there in the crowd (by the way, kudos to Howard for not being overwhelmed and being so nice to so many people - I can not image what it is like to be swamped like that.) I left the crowded tent feeling unhappy and unwell.

My husband Jim encouraged me to go back and make my way towards the throng. The only way to get to Gov. Dean was to go through the sound system, which wasn't possible. But the crowd was pushing him in that direction. When the governor finally got close enough I yelled (in my horrible, laryngitis-sounding voice) "it's my birthday - can I get a picture with you?!"

The governor noticed, but he was signing many books and pieces of paper that people put in front of him. One person kept getting Howard to sign more and more things (if those items show up on E-bay I am going to be very annoyed.) Howard Dean got a little closer and so I barked again "it's my birthday - can I get a picture?"He said something like of course, and came close enough to where I was (with a bit of table and sound system between us) and posed for a picture with me. I got the picture taken (it's not developed yet!) I hope it comes out.While I had the governor there and his attention for several seconds I told him I was a volunteer in New Hampshire and that I wanted to thank him: I can sincerely say the Dean campaign really changed my life. I have gotten involved in politics in ways I never did before.

Governor Dean said thanks. He shook my hand good-bye and turned away (please understand this was all happening very fast).I asked him to wait just a moment. It was then that I felt that time slowed down.

I spontaneously pulled off the Pentagon September 11th pin that I wore on my badge. It is a nice pin: not over the top, not hurrah we are great - just a reminder. Of a friend. Of others who were killed there and in New York and Pennsylvania. Of the fear of trying to track down friends and family here in DC and in NYC on that day. Of what has happened since.I wear this pin on my purse everyday and when I attend political or other events where it is appropriate I wear the pin so it is visible.Without planning it, I pulled the pin off my badge. "I want to give this to you" I squeaked in my laryngitis voice.

The governor turned around. I pushed the pin in his direction and he put out his hand. Knowing that I would have several seconds I tried to explain."I wear this pin to remember our friend, David Charlebois. He was the co-pilot of American Airlines flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon. David was gay and was involved with the gay pilots union. It really bothers me that President Bush uses the death of a person, a gay person to justify the war in Iraq, even though according to Bush, someone like David is marginalized in our country. Someone like David does not have the same legal rights as everyone else."

I thanked Howard Dean for speaking out against the war. Governor Dean asked me again which flight our friend was on and I told him. He looked at the pin and put it in his shirt pocket, and said he'd remember.The Governor really listened to what I had to say.

He thanked me - he then gave me a huggy handshake [we couldn't really hug with a table between us] and then he turned around because he need to deal with the 300 other people who also really wanted to see him. But I did get to tell him thanks. But I don't know if he understood the full reason why I said that more than once. So I will try to explain it now.An open thank you to Howard Dean.Thank you for speaking out against the war in Iraq. You spoke out against it early and continue to talk about it. Only a few other people in positions of authority initially spoke out against the war.

If I should die in a terrorist attack, I don't want my death (nor the death of anyone else) used for political gain or for an unjust, uncalled for war, such as the one in Iraq. Yet the deaths of nearly 3,000 people have been used to justify invading another country, causing the deaths of over 900 U.S. service members [here are their names: http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2003/iraq/forces/casualties/]; and the deaths of unknown number of Iraqis [please see these two sites for reasonable research on the numbers: http://civilians.info/iraq/ and http://www.rediff.com/news/2004/may/24iraq.htm?zcc=rl] Howard Dean was right when he said that we are not any safer once Saddam Hussein was captured.

Now more people in positions of power are saying the same thing.The second big thank you to Howard Dean is for getting me off my butt and really doing something. We had always done small bits for campaigns before (my husband Jim more than I); distributing flyers, putting up signs, attending rallies, handing out sample ballots on election day, making some minor financial contributions. But I was never really a part of a campaign. And without becoming a paid staff person on a campaign I didn't feel there was much I could do.

But I did many things with the Dean campaign. Without having to give up my regular job, I was still fully involved. I went up to New Hampshire as a volunteer for a week and a half before their primary! And after the Virginia primary came and went in February, I am still involved in the political process. At the national level, at the state level, at the county level, at the precinct level.

For the first time since I began voting at the age of 18, I attended my state democratic convention. I am making a difference in the political process. Howard Dean made it not just about the candidate, but about the progressive movement. About working within the Democratic party, energizing it to fight the battles at the local, state, and national levels that make a real difference in people's lives.And it is not just about talking - it is about doing. It is about getting involved at whatever level I can.

To use the quote that Howard Dean frequently tells Democracy for America supporters "You have the power!" I want my country back. And I am willing to work for it. So thank you Howard. Happy Birthday to me indeed. :-)Terilee

Here is a great article from The Nation which speaks about the weakness' within the GOP & how they could be targeted in this election not only to help Kerry win the presidency, but also to inspire long term reform. The article states:

While attempts to harness "Anybody but Bush" psychologies and to attract voters without saying much that is controversial might win Kerry a narrow victory, this strategy would be unlikely to create a framework for successful four- or eight-year governance. Deconstructing the Republican coalition is a better long-term bet, and could be done. The result, however, might be to uncage serious progressive reform.

I pulled this quote from the July 7 Sun-Sentinel in South Florida: The area is home to the finance chairman of the Republican National Committee and many other deep-pocketed GOP donors.Yet, as the Nov. 2 election approaches, Southwest Florida also appears to be a growing ground for born-again Democrats and party converts."I voted for Bush the last time, but I have mixed emotions right now," Greg Davenport said. "A lot of people vote their pocketbook, but the war troubles me because there doesn't seem to be a clear exit strategy."

This reminded me of a time recently when I was invited to speak at a meetup in San Diego. While talking about the new strategy for TruthandHope, and the particulars of speaking the proper language to disgruntled Republicans some in the audience were appalled that approaching the Iraq war from the standpoint of it's being built on lies would not sell to the average conservative. However, I pointed out that the same subject (Iraq War) was still a selling point in the battle to strip GOP support from Bush, if approached from the point of view that we clearly had no exit strategy or plan for after the taking of Baghdad, something that goes to the core of conservative belief. Gulf War I, with it's policy of overwhelming force & vast coalition was the ultimate strategical victory in their eyes, but although many conservatives support the ousting of Saddam Hussein, the clear lack of exit strategy is unforgivable.

This is an example of speaking the proper language to exploit the real weakness we have today in the GOP and their ability to close ranks & win elections with what is typically a minority of registered supporters. Myself & the creative team are made up of former Republicans who can speak this language, hit the hot buttons & shave some support from the Bush re-election campaign. Remember each Bush supporter that votes Kerry is two votes, but even if they are only encouraged to vote Libertarian, Constitution or Conservative party, for they cannot come to the other side completely is still a win & still counts against Bush's expected totals, as well as offsetting the 'Nader Factor' which will be a reality come November.

If you haven't visited it lately our website www.truthandhope.org has been changed to a more concise format highlighting our new campaign. By no means is this the full revision we are looking forward to producing, but it removes the outdated material & briefly covers the pertinent aspects of our new focus & should be a simpler navigation for those seeking that information and/or to contribute or join the group. One bug I have detected is that when I click on the blog link it often pulls up the unavailable page, but upon refreshing the blog appears. If anyone has a clue as to why that is, I would love to hear it!

A quick story: I just returned from the Glastonbury Festival in England & there are a couple things made an impression on me. First was the vast amount of people wearing shirts with messages such as "Change America" or "Not with my money" (a reference to using tax dollars to fund wars based on lies) and a very popular "F*CK B*SH" shirt with a picture of our favorite President on it. I have a photo of a nine year old boy wearing the "F*CK B*SH" shirt & his father standing proudly by, happy that I would want the photo & hoping I would share it with other Americans. along with a multitude of banners reflecting the same messages. I engaged quite a few people with these shirts and others in conversations & none of them were from the US. It occurred to me that our President was a very honest person when he stated that he is a 'uniter' and not a divider. In fact, I was impressed at how tightly he has united a great portion of the world with his actions. Unfortunately, I was also clearly reminded of Governor Dean's often used lines of dialogue where he described an America that was once looked up to in the world, a world where you would be hard pressed to find anyone who looked up to America anymore.

The people I spoke to all had a similar look, as they described their fears & asked me as if I had the only vote if we were making a change in November. It was inconceivable that the election should be close at all, as they see so clearly the frightening force for conflict our nation is becoming under President Bush. Having themselves grown up admiring America, many expressed a sure conviction that we must be about to oust Bush in a landslide because they could not believe that Americans would truly support such a President. Their fear & helplessness that we would not was palpable. There is a strong support of American music and style among the youth of England, ironic to me as I grew up listening to English music & appreciating their style. It is a flag waving culture (literally) and across the expanses of tents set up for the event which was attended by 180,000 people there were a great deal of flags set up, most English or British, but I also noticed Italian, German, Canadian, South African, Australian, etc. along with football clubs and others. Although I never had the slightest bit of animosity directed at me during the event or my conversations, and there were no incidents that I was aware of, despite the drinking & other activities going on all through the nights, it did occur to me that if I would have posted an American flag outside my tent, it would be reasonable to expect it may well have been vandalized due to the emotions running so high & inspired by our President.

It's not just a matter of 'I want my country back.' I want our place in the world back. I want to turn away from the unilateral preemptive policies that are dividing us from our friends around the world. Friends who so desperately want to welcome us back into the world community as a partner, not a bully. I do not want to have to pause to consider before declaring my nationality while abroad. This trip which was to be a vacation, a moment to take my mind away from these issues, has served to reinforce the powerful reasons why this fight is so important.

Something to consider: it was expressed repeatedly to me that miracles are not expected from John Kerry, as our next President, but just sending a message to the world that Americans do not support a President like Bush, that we are not seeking to build an empire to bully our friends into submission and that we will make a change from such a path at the first opportunity would be in and of itself a powerful symbol and message to those around the world who hold fear in their hearts where once there was admiration.

That said, I hope you can help us to do our part to engage the soft Republicans in this matter. If there was any doubt that this group is in play for the Bush reelection effort, the highlighting of John McCain that is beginning shows they are well aware of this vulnerability. Please help us reach our goal of $20,000 to pay for producing the new media we have scripted for this effort, revamp the website in it's entirety (and far more dynamically to appeal to our target audience) and a test market of the new spots once produced at www.truthandhope.org. The contribution tab is now clearly placed in the upper right of each page.

Lastly, the DemocracyFest (formerly DeanFest) of which we are a lead sponsor & will have a special area (I hope to meet many of you there!) has secured it's location in Great Barrington, MA for July 24-25. They need help to raise funds for their necessary deposits, but more urgently to air some radio advertising of a spot being cut this week. Greetings from Joanie Benoit

Greetings to all Truth and Hope members!

I am Joan Benoit, and I’m leading a group of people working with Eugene on the next Truth and Hope media project: Swing State Radio. The goal is to, as Howard Dean says, get George Bush a one-way ticket back to Crawford Texas.

Those of you who jumped on board with the first of our Dean ads may remember me from the Blog for America boards, begging for money the very first time, three days before the WA caucuses. We had ads produced and running within 36 hours of the original idea, thanks to your and Eugene’s willingness to jump in with both feet. We all learned a lot about each other with that effort, and we all learned that the grassroots CAN make a difference. Although Truth and Hope made Dean’s Vermont victory possible, I often wonder what would have happened if we had begun our efforts earlier.

Well, we will have no regrets come November, because we are gearing up NOW to take on George Bush.

Here are the details of the project to date.

Radio Ads in Swing States….
Why radio? It’s cost effective and surgical. Different stations appeal to different demographics, and the data telling us who listens to which stations, and when, are readily available. We can select a target and hit it efficiently. We can deliver different messages to different demographic groups in the same market.

Radio is cost-effective. In some markets you can buy 60 seconds of air time for under $200. Forward buys and full-schedule buys bring the costs down further.

Targeting Republicans…
Not all Republicans, but fiscal conservatives who are not overly swayed by religious issues. Why Republicans?

First, current ad efforts from the other anti-Bush 527s and PACs appear to be targeting swing voters, not Bush’s base. Targeting Republicans avoids duplication of efforts.

Secondly, this sub-group of Republicans is ripe for our message. News stories in the media have focused lately on Bush’s trouble with parts of his base. This is not surprising: Bush is a bad Republican.

Bush’s deficits, his wasteful and unnecessary nation-building experiment in Iraq, the threats to privacy posed by the Patriot Act and the costly Medicare Bill bait-and-switch are all among issues that are causing some long-time Republicans to balk.

With humorous, engaging ads.
Most of us are tired of the shrill, negative ads saturating the media. We believe that the best approach is to show respect for the values of these fiscal conservatives, and help them see that voting for Bush is not consistent with those values.

What we need
We need funds to produce the first ads. Once the ads are produced, we will ask you all to pass the word and we will approach maxed-out Kerry donors for funds.

We need to test the ads in the markets in which we will advertise. We cannot afford to air ads that are ineffective. We also need a professional website redesign. The ads will direct people to the site and we need to be sure we have plenty of content there that reinforces the message. Eugene and I have put pencil to paper and we think that $20,000 will accomplish all three goals.

We are soliciting support from groups that have voter attitude databases and we have a pollster helping us make the decision on where the ads can do the most good.

We have a team of accomplished advertising professionals working with us on strategy and copy. At this point, it is an all-volunteer effort.

We hope we can count on your support as we work to stop the damage George Bush and his cronies are doing to America and the world. It has never been more important to act.

New Update from Eugene Hedlund
Eugene just sent out an email update for those who may not have seen it yet:

It has been a while and I hope your energy has fared better through the past weeks than mine. I did not anticipate such a drop off from when Gov. Dean endorsed Senator Kerry, but alas lethargy set in, as well as my taking the opportunity to catch up on business and personal issues which had been neglected, during our run. I had the initial thought of quickly creating and airing anti-Bush media, but such a multitude hit the airwaves from various large and well established groups that it seemed a waste to throw more money into the same pot, without a new or different approach. Admittedly at times I was content to accept it as a great and inspirational period in my life, and let it go at that returning to 'business as usual.' Mistakes that were made along the way were clearer in hindsight, as the desire to leap into the fray took hold with state votes coming up so quickly that we jumped in to the races without the necessary infrastructure, support teams and elements being established. Through these last few weeks however the emptiness or hole for lack of better term that has developed without the aspects of TruthandHope.Org in my daily life has also becomes apparent. Day to day business with the profit motive just does not compare in fulfillment, albeit a necessary evil. Because of this the desire to carry on in some sense was strong, but the different approach and official support were still necessary. These aspects have come together.

I have been in continual contact with Joani Benoit and we have developed an approach that is not being used at this time, and may not be feasible for most groups. Most importantly, she and others have agreed to be on the Board of Directors for TruthandHope.Org, should this get off the ground. I am tempted to introduce the board and tam members now, but the email would become overly long, and may as it is. The target audience of the campaign we would like to create is one that you are probably aware exists, but the how of how to approach them effectively would not be ascertainable to most organizations. That group being the multitude of disenchanted and disillusioned Republicans.

I could post many op-ed links, statements of officials such as Senators McCain and Lugar along with others which demonstrate the growing rift within the GOP, however you probably know individuals who are upset with the Bush administration on various points, but are not keen on voting for Kerry, and over the next few months if left to their own devices will most likely vote to re-elect out of habit. On the left dissent comes easier than the right. We would like to embark on a campaign to create a safe place for discussion and open dialogue with disaffected Republicans, who do not feel the current administration is upholding their core beliefs. Beliefs such as smaller government which are cast aside in favor of new ineffective programs such as the prescription drugs bill and Patriot Act. Belief in supporting our military and learning lessons from the past such as Vietnam, which are ignored as this administration leapt to war without a clear exit strategy. Beliefs in a government that upholds the separation of church and state. The far right would make it seem as though all Republicans are religious ideologues through their control of policy, but the truth is that most Republicans are more moderate and either disagree with many social and environmental policies currently being pushed through, or at the very least support the belief that the federal government should not be making policy based on religious ideals, a founding principle of our country. Keep in mind that many gun owning, freedom loving constitutionalists are considerably right wing in their ideology, and if they supported either major party it would be the GOP, however this administration is not upholding their beliefs in any sense either.

Ron Reagan Jr subtly expressed the concerns of many in his fathers eulogy when he stated: "Dad was also a deeply, unabashedly religious man. But he never made the fatal mistake of so many politicians, wearing his faith on his sleeve to gain political advantage. True, after he was shot and nearly killed early in his presidency, he came to believe that God had spared him in order that he might do good. But he accepted that as a responsibility, not a mandate. And there is a profound difference."

Joani and I are both former Republicans. My conversion was far more recent, but the point is that we can create media and speak the language that will not come across as lecturing or demonizing. When such things are approached from the wrong angle defenses rise and the desired effect is not achieved, but rather the opposite. The conservative community does not promote individualism, but rather a strict loyalty. However these are individuals with genuine concerns. These people need to understand there are choices other than rubber stamping an administration that does not govern as they would wish, a party that has gone to extremes, while it's majority are moderate. They need to know that there are many others just like them with the same concerns.

My passion is to push for a country where the GOP is more moderate, and the Democratic party more progressive. In a country of 300 million we should never again be faced with a choice between a candidate that fails to inspire, and one who is stripping the country of liberties and it can be said that if re-elected would take us on a road to ruin, thus the opposition party is galvanized behind whomever their nominee may be. In this election which is of such great import a few percentage points shaved from Bush's totals could have profound effect, especially considering that Nader will be shaving some from Kerry's. In a long term sense, I submit that not only is every Republican we can get to vote for Kerry effectively 2 votes, or each that abstains, votes Nader, a write in or 'none of the above' is still a vote for Kerry in a sense as it is detracted from Bush's expected totals, but that if we can encourage GOP voters to show an open mind and vote the other party for the good of the country, or at least not vote to re-elect it becomes easier the next time to convince them to vote with us again with good results, and ultimately I believe that is best for the country to both promote a movement of moderates within the GOP and also to promote free thinking. I believe that it is short sighted to expect that one party is always right, the other always wrong or that one should expect to agree point for point with their parties elected officials, and always vote based on (R) or (D). I believe that human beings are more complex than this, and we are all better off the more citizens that can be encouraged to conscientiously weigh each candidate, rather than simply rubber stamping elephants and donkeys.

We are also working in support of a group called 'Comadres for Political Progress' which will reach out to the Latina community, and is based here in Southern California. By co-branding we enjoy mutual benefits, as we have common cause. This group intends to reach out to Latina communities in swing states, and leverage the advantage we have in California, as it is not 'in play' with the Latina community by sending supporters to states such as Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada to galvanize support for progressives and the Democratic Party. This campaign is being created by TruthandHope.Org board members with backgrounds as activists within the Latina and other minority communities, and is headed by Irma Flores. We will follow with more information about this project as it develops.

So, there is the approach, now the nuts and bolts: Behind the scenes we have been meeting or conversing with various groups for support, and although the interest has been high the process is slow. I have been remiss in requesting funds, but it is clear that if we had the developmental aspects finished, coupled with our past media and track record the support would come through quicker. We have a target goal of $20,000. These funds are to pay the necessary attorney/accountant's fees which have never subsided. Additionally, these funds will allow us to hire and retain professional web designers to create the sites needed to support these campaigns, and finally to create the initial media spots. We have scripted media for our target audience ready for production, and have an expectation of support from a large national organization with polling data to most effectively target our desired audience & demographic.

There are future plans to expand our groups base not only through the web, but also direct mail campaigns utilizing the donor lists from both contributors to Democratic candidates whose ideals we share, but also those who supported more moderate Republicans candidates, for example John McCain supporters in 2000, who make up a large block of the disaffected Republicans. Your help now will allow us to create the foundation needed to solicit this support, as well as that from other groups and fundraisers. Part of the reorganization of TruthandHope.Org is the reintroduction of the 'non-federal' account, or what is typically know as a 527 (non-PAC) which does allow for unlimited contributions from individuals, corporations or labor groups, thus allowing us to with this foundation of new web sites and completed media solicit the monies needed and available for the creation of this campaign for change.

By Way of Self-Promotion

Where We Stand on the Blog

I am hopefully going to be posting with more regularity on the blog in order to help Eugene in keeping together the vibrant community that coalesced around Truth and Hope this winter. I will be linking to stories on the premier progressive blogs and websites and also, on occasion, remarking on events myself (again, hopefully, as time permits).

To begin with, however, I wanted to reiterate Truth and Hope's central goal of helping to elect progressive candidates at all levels of government. There are various efforts across the internet and blogosphere that provide a good start in this effort:

First, as many of you know, there are the "Dean Dozen" candidates identified for support by Democracy for America. One of my personal favorites on this list is Richard Morrison who has the guts to take on one of the most odious men in Washington, Tom Delay.

Kos has been mulling over launching a fundraising drive for specific candidates (also see here).

Philly-based blogger Atrios has been plugging Pennsylvania Democratic Senatorial candidate Joe Hoeffel, whose own blog is here. (Gov. Dean himself will be headlining a Hoeffel fundraising event this Sunday; those of you in southeastern PA might be interested in looking into attending.)

If you would rather give to an organization, Wellstone Action helps train future progressive candidates at "Camp Wellstone."

Turman for Congress/DeanFest/T&H DVD's

If you are not already familiar with him, I would like to introduce Christopher Turman who is running for the Democratic nomination in West Virginia's 2nd congressional district on May 11 to unseat Republican incumbent Shelly Capito. His district is 54% registered Democrat & 34% registered Republican. To quote a refrain that we are too painfully familiar with...he is the candidate that can win. To date he has raised only 20k less than the incumbent & 34k more in individual contributions, and this since only March 1. His two opponents for the Democratic nomination had raised less than $1,000 as of the March 31 filings, but have the all too important advantage of name recognition. Governor Dean has expressed his support of Christopher & this is an opportunity to flex our muscle & support a progressive candidate to take back the country! Touching Base
I just wanted to check in and give everyone a quick update on what's going on. We are actively putting together our new Bush media project, as well as developing the new website. Additionally, I have been contacted by various groups for sponsorship or partnerships, which I am sorting through.

I have been emailed with information regarding various progressive candidates who would be interested in media help too.

It will probably take 2-3 weeks for the Bush project to be ready to roll out for review. This time will allow for the website development and working through these other projects. I think it is sensible to take advantage of the time we have right now to square things away logistically. In the past we rushed things out and sorted the paperwork and technical issues after, because the primaries and caucuses were upon us. Things such as website redesign, and structural issues were always put off, to focus on the necessary issues at the time, but now we can take a moment to address them properly.

So, I want to make sure everyone knows that things are happening, and we are still very open to suggestion. Actually, this is a good time for such, as we are actively sorting and planning full time. This was also an opportunity to send out an update, without a money ask - definitely my least favorite part.

I look forward to hearing what you are up to and your thoughts. I will keep you up to date, as things are developing and am excited to work with you on more projects soon!

I have returned from the DC trip, with what seems like more jet lag than when I travel to Europe! Thanks to your help I was able to deliver $10,300 to Governor Dean's effort for John Kerry!

After speaking to the group there was a brief meet and greet. Gov. Dean saw my nametag and announced that it was because of TruthandHope that he won Vermont! That was such a spectacular moment to remember and you should all know how much that meant to Governor Dean and how deeply he appreciates our efforts. He did not expect to win the state, only to do fairly well, perhaps in the 20 - 30% range. That is something that you and I can take enormous pleasure in, having a hand in the victory and what was our one opportunity to celebrate in the nomination process.

After that he came out with Senator Kerry and the congressional members who supported DFA and formally endorsed him. Kerry spoke briefly, before they headed out to the George Washington University event for the public endorsement. Senator Kerry committed that the first bill he would send to congress would be health care reform. The meeting focused on Dean and Kerry talking about the tough primary season, which focuses on their differences, but how they need to unite and talk about what they have in common.

When Dean and Kerry left for the rally, Senator Harkin spent some time with us. Then we met with Congresswoman Pelosi, Senator Kennedy, Senator Daschle and Terry McAuliffe separately. The gist of these meetings was a reach out to the Dean supporters and review of why this election is so very important. They all emphasized the important contributions we have made to the party and how they needed our help to overcome the Bush campaign.

At the unity dinner the former candidates spoke as people were still filing in. If you did not see a broadcast of the speeches, I encourage you to go to cspan.org and watch. The former candidates including Dean are not included there, but the main program is. Al Gore was particularly forceful, as he is in all of his speeches now. Jimmy Carter gave a moving speech from the point of view of a Grandfather and Bill Clinton was...well Bill Clinton. John Kerry spoke last, as the nominee, but following Clinton is tough to do! Definitely watch the speeches, at least Gore/Carter/Clinton if not Gore through Kerry.

The most important point of these meetings seemed to be the genuine impression that I had of respect and appreciation for Gov. Dean and his supporters. There was an implied understanding that it is thanks to him and his followers and their energies that we have a real chance to defeat Bush in November. Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton singled Howard Dean out to thank him for giving the party its voice, rallying new support and being vocally against the war from the beginning. When Clinton mentions the impact Dean has had there was a long standing ovation for Dean.

On Friday we met with some various progressive groups. A couple that stood out to me were 'Ralph don't Run' and the intensified efforts that they plan to undertake to research areas that Nader is strongest in to develop ground support for talking with his supporters about Nader's effect on this election, as well as creating new flash media on this subject. The word needs to get out that the Republicans contributed to his campaign in 2000, and many Republicans are beginning to give financial contributions to both Bush and Nader now. We may work with them to develop some anti-Nader media, because this could end up being the swing vote in November.

Another group that stood out was 21st century Democrats, with which Gov. Dean has mentioned working directly. They have a large organization dedicated to recruiting, training and supporting progressive candidates at all levels of government from school boards through senate and congress. This is a powerful tool and ally. I can see trying to develop a relationship where DFA directly endorses with Dean's name various candidates, 21st century provides ground support and training, and we could lend a hand by running some media in support of these candidates. This is the tactic that the Christian Coalition used to take the country from the ground up, understanding that if you fill the lower levels of government it becomes a training ground for the upper, while their message begins to infiltrate the cities.

I made a presentation about TruthandHope, and there was support for the concept of running anti-Bush media, in particular a concept that Joanie Benoit developed to utilize our conversational format from the radio ads we used in the nomination season, but develop a couple of characters that we will stick with and people can become familiar with. These characters can engage in a water cooler type discussion about any new media the Bush team produces, or any particularly absurd lie or distortion he or one of his surrogates has spoken publicly (obviously a daily event!). There are many heavy ads going out and bio pieces for Kerry, but taking a lighter hearted approach, while slipping in strong messages could have a powerful effect and fill a niche.

Beyond that we are also exploring other partnerships with groups that fill roles other than ours, but where we contribute to each other's goals, as well as sponsoring the efforts of other groups who wish to raise funds to support progressive candidates or causes, but lack the resources to set up a 527 or PAC organization.

There are some more meetings to be had, structure to develop, plus the website design needs to be finished up, but with our previous success, particularly in Vermont we will have some important projects and a role to play. Governor Dean said that he would post a link to our site on the new DFA site, which I am going to remind him of, after I send this out! I will place a reciprocal link and contribution bat as soon as and if it is possible, so we can support his important group through TruthandHope.

On another note, I have been informed of a party on Tuesday at Ron Burkle's house (He owns Ralph’s food stores among other things) in San Diego, CA. It is a fundraiser for John Kerry with James Taylor playing. The price of admission is $1,000, and any of you who gave this amount during our fundraiser are entitled to a ticket. I know that some who did are far from Southern California, but the offer is open. It also entitles you to a ticket to Dean's next event in Southern California, I will see if that can be used toward an event in your home state if you had given that amount to our effort. If anyone would like to attend, please let me know - I can count any contribution you have already made toward that total. I can and still am accepting contributions for Kerry to put through the Dean's List on an ongoing basis, but that will not be our focus at any foreseeable point now, nor will it be on our website. In fact, it would probably be a violation anyway.

I am sure that I have missed some greater details of my trip and such that would be of interest, but for the sake of getting this out without it being too long and adhering to the merciless nature of my jetlag, I will leave it at this for now.

There is so much admiration, thanks and support for what we have done, I have to thank you all again. It would not be possible without you.

I have $3,075.44 for Kerry from TruthandHope members for Dean in my possession right now. Beyond that, I have 41 people that have requested Credit Card forms or who are sending checks. So, if the average contribution is $50, we're half way there and if it is $100 we're well over that. I expect that between the mail delivering and people faxing from work tomorrow that number should grow significantly.

I really appreciate your support in this and making it easier to request in the first place with that support. It took me a few hours to get up the nerve to send out the initial request, as it is obviously not something we ever wanted to do when we started this, or during all the time that we have individually supported Governor Dean. I knew we'd even lose a few people, so far only 3, but even that is hard for me. I hate to think that people who support Governor Dean, or support TruthandHope will be so apt to withdraw support over one issue, especially when Dean has always pledged support for the nominee and is so actively supporting Kerry in his interviews and speeches.

I don't feel that I am a leader in this effort. It is my support for Governor Dean and his taking the lead along with the prospect of his gaining credit and higher standing with the nominee for his agenda that makes it not only possible as it was a couple days ago, but something I can now say that I am fully behind. I know that everyone needs their own time to consider supporting someone we so actively tried to defeat, because I have needed my time to get to such a place. My initial thought when Gov. Dean dropped out was that I would vote for him in November anyway. Now I see that whether or not someone commits to help financially, there are ultimately only four options: Vote for Kerry, Vote for Bush, Vote for a 3rd party or don't vote at all. Three of those four help Bush to another term. Aside from Gov. Dean's support of Kerry and if I understand from the Face the Nation show today correctly, an official endorsement this week, when I think of the Patriot Act, War based on lies, NCLB, Medicare reform, job loss, negative perception around the world, FCC attacking free speech and the absurd tax breaks that I get as a corporate business owner and in the "1%" while so many people are working so hard and cannot pay for health or child care, as Gov. Dean puts it any change even "incremental change" is so incredibly desirable, so very necessary that I can easily support Kerry or just about anyone else that had a reasonable chance to end this reign.

A couple people have emailed in the past hour that they are now pledging support, due to what Richard Clarke said on 60 minutes. It has not aired on the west coast yet, but I am looking forward to watching it. Perhaps there is some more (as if we needed it) good material for a Bush ad! Speaking of which, I am sitting on a couple business plans for TruthandHope moving forward and hope to have some positive feedback from Gov. Dean next week, as well as the other Dean's list members who represent large donors. I am excited to get back to airing media in support of progressive candidates, and against those that need to go! In the interim I have been meeting and speaking with other Dean supporters who have spent the months doing rather than saying and we are all on the same page for moving forward with full effort again to oust the current administration. It continues to be the most inspiring thing in my life thus far to be associated with so many people who not only feel so strongly about taking their country back, but are doing so much to make it happen.

These fields were supposed to be required in paypal, but that function has not worked. Our new merchant relationship will alleviate that issue, but it will not be available for a couple days and will not solve the past contribution problem.

Possible Organizational Structure
Eugene writes: "A lot of where we may fit in will be clearer on the 18th. Also some of these concepts are already being pursued by other Dean groups, so hopefully we can work with them, as opposed to recreating what has been or is being done. However here are some ideas I have in regards to what I would like to see TruthandHope evolve into over time:

I would like to see the organization have three arms. The first being the central group, which is made up of state and regional leaders. The purpose will be to disseminate the feedback from the various areas in regards to platform, agenda and focus for the whole organization. This group would handle the fundraising and distribution portions, having a greater focus on and understanding of their local areas for the purposes of airing media or other projects, as well as feedback and concerns.

The second arm deals with General Election projects. This term is used by another group, but it fits: I would like a "rapid response media team." If we can utilize volunteer help as much as possible, it saves greatly in costs of production, but we will need to be willing to pay for professional creation to make this work in terms of speed. The Bush campaign, as well as their supportive 527 and PAC groups will air plenty of lies and distortions in their media. The 9/11 ad has been offensive to many already. I would like to have the facility to quickly put together media and run counter ads to what they are airing in targeted markets, predominately in swing states as that is where their media is targeted. It will not take the same budget they have to generate an effect. We will need a PR arm as an aspect to this, to quickly get the word out to the press of what we are doing each time and detail the specific lies and distortions we are countering. This can also be effective to counter any public speeches or comments made that run afoul of the truth. Logistically this would be a challenge, funds wise also, as we would need to be able to move very quickly, but it can be done and it may be our greatest area of influence and effectiveness if we pull it off.

Another aspect of this is to create an archive of raw data, print, web, radio and television that is cataloged and readily accessible to create the media with and directly reference in our counter statements.

The third arm is to have state pages on the TruthandHope website. On each state page the various elections from local to statewide can be listed, with the major candidates, their positions and websites linked. The important aspect will be to note if we have endorsed or are supporting a candidate, or if they have addressed or pledge to address the issues we lay out in the TruthandHope.Org platform. Many local candidates for elections in races where little money is spent would find it a tremendous boon to have support from our organization. An ambitious idea is to facilitate local grassroots (or our own for more prominent races) advertising that can be directly contributed to the airing of for these races. It is a much more intricate version of the concept we use now to allow members to support specific states. A gateway page to the states pages will highlight the most important races and others on a rotating basis. DFA 2.0 may address some or all of this based on the highlights that have been released on their website, so this is a particularly flexible idea.

Another aspect I would like to create is the ability for the members to have user pages where they can put personal information, photos, creative notes or whatever else so that we can get to know each other and work together more, as opposed to just the communication from me to all of you and back.

These are just some outlines of concepts I would like to throw out for discussion. I would love your feedback and ideas as well. It is from your ideas added to a couple of my own that the whole of this concept was put together. It is certainly an ambitious undertaking that could not be done in a few days, but with what has been done in just over a month, I know that we have a nucleus here already that can accomplish amazing things, so why not try?

Business/Affinity Relationships

The idea being that we can use our spending power to support each other, rather than other corporations and it would be a way to support TruthandHope other than just contributions from individuals discretionary funds. There are some legal hoops, as an example I am a mortgage banker. I thought of pledging a $1,000 contribution to the group for each closed loan and doing them for something to the effect of Countrywide's posted rate and fees, less $500 so it is clearly a good deal and that I am not simply upping my costs by $1,000 to give the contribution. With this or other relationships the form of contribution would have to be that I or the merchant would give you a credit and then you would have to personally give the money to TruthandHope, since it cannot come from a corporation. If we develop another 527 group to focus on state races or issues only that would no longer be the case. Would something like this from a variety of businesses offering a percentage or fixed amount be of interest? Also, any of you that have businesses or services to promote, please let me know. I have heard from a few people in the past, but could not act until the legal issues were resolved.

Other mortgage professionals are welcome too, I am only licensed in nine states."

Commissions
Eugene writes:
"I have had questions as to whether or not I receive a commission for this work. I may over discuss this topic, but it is important to me that it is thoroughly answered. Typically one would receive a salary or take the agency split of 15% as payment, that is how campaign staff make a living or other .org or PAC/527 groups. If you think of how much money is raised by some campaigns or organizations, this is quite a significant amount...

That being said, TruthandHope has no paid staff, including myself. However we do have an advertising agency. This was born form the initial buys in Washington. Some stations will allow an organization to self advertise and take 15% off of the gross price, others will not, so we pay full price and the difference goes into the pockets of the station or it's sales agents. It makes no sense to give them the money, when we could use it. On a couple occasions we have used the discount and paid the reduced price directly. In Connecticut we used an agent to get on swiftly, so he earned the 15%. When we run print ads there is no agency discount, so the merchant and attorneys fees for disclosure of the donations were taken from radio monies. As you see we have run media with 100% or more of the money raised. I pay a 2.9% + .35 fee for every transaction to the merchant account, which is a loss. Immediately we are down to 12% of the radio commission, keeping in mind that we have not always taken the commission and that there is none for print.

A corporation cannot contribute to TruthandHope, so the monies cannot be paid back into the organization. On this note, another loss is that I am having to go back through and refund all corporate and foreign contributions. What the advertising agency can do is pay some bills. It has paid for ad creation, $3,600 for radio, $500 for Beta creation and duplication. The UPS bill is just under $1,000. The new merchant account I am setting up was $500. That leaves us with a profit still, save for one large bill - the attorney's fees. I have paid the retainer, but have not received an updated billing and I don't want to! We have to file every donation, every media buy and every expenditure, all billable hours. Also there will be some fines to pay for late filing, as we jumped on the air in Washington and Maine, before the disclosures were properly done. Our attorney has done a magnificent job getting everything caught up quickly as possible, but that is another bill I am awaiting. For those to whom I have expressed that I hope we just break even, that is what I mean. I expected to spend about $15,000 on this endeavor, the time is a pleasure as I can afford it. If I can avoid that expenditure it would be wonderful. In the future it may become necessary to hire a paid staff. Also if it continues to take away from my "real" job, I will need to address that concern. If and/or when those eventualities occur, I will work some figures and either set a fixed cost or a percentage of contributions that will need to be set aside and will propose it to the group.

Before anyone notes the general fund, we did raise just over $4,000, but you'll also note that we overspent in some states especially on Super Tuesday to either complete or pad the buys giving us the best chance for success."

Delegates for Dean
Eugene writes: "I have read reports that in Austin we had some strong caucus wins, but overall no delegates were won. We are still raising funds for the pre-18th states and will run media as the money allows. I believe that with phone banking and targeted media buys we could possibly win some delegates, but am growing concerned that the money may not be best spent here anymore. As always I will do what your fundraising dictates, but after Gov. Dean's meeting [yesterday with John Kerry] and with his impending announcement it may be that he will officially drop out and release his delegates. There have been requests to raise funds for future states, which I am open to, but also somewhat loathe to do. If we raise funds for North Carolina or Alaska for example, and Gov. Dean does pull out completely I do not want to be in a situation where people want refunds, yet would hate to have them feel their money went to waste. I appreciate your feedback on this."

On in Texas
We're on the air in Texas-KGSR in Austin all day. Texas had raised $1,100, Florida $600 and LA/MS $230 total. I had to adhere to the $1,500 rule and spent $2,000 to run in Austin. General Fund money was spent to make up for shortfalls on Super Tuesday and even add to existing runs. However, as we wait for the 18th and funds are slower in raising, I could not do such this time. The decision to focus on Austin was based on advice from people in Texas, but more so from nationwide groups that had data to show this was our best bet for a limited budget. Also the phone banking is being targeted to Austin, so it makes sense to work together and provide some 'air' support for that effort.

I will be flying back to the US tomorrow and on Wednesday I will send out an outline of how TandH could be structured and where we could be heading, along with greater discussion of anti-Bush ads, which there seemed to be a strong majority in support of. This will be mainly for discussion, as the 18th is not far and direct and/or complementary support of what Gov. Dean does is of the utmost import.

I do not want to get too into this right now, but if there are any questions about what TandH is doing or has done, please feel free to send them to me directly. Unfortunately there is a negative backlash that is beginning due to Howard Dean and Roy Neel's public thanks of TruthandHope.Org - which means all of you are being thanked, definitely not just me. My name may be on some emails or the website, but the membership has made this happen. Anyhow, a particular group's whole intention is to bring about publicity for itself based on harnessing the passion of Dean supporters, so our unintended publicity is causing friction. Unfortunately, attacking TandH is easier than doing something new,creative and effective. Hopefully these issues sort themselves out soon. I have always tried to be an open book, probably disclosing more than many or most groups or organizations you have been a part of, and I will continue to do so. We have raised $200 for Texas and $320 for Florida, the other states are less than $100. It is understandable with the delegate results and how much money and effort went into Super Tuesday that things would slow down. If we do bring in the money to run media, I suggest focusing on these two states, based on the tracking data that we do have. However, I will run media anywhere the money arrives for, as always. Getting the message out that a vote of Dean is still possible and why is the key. There was a phone banking effort for Super Tuesday states to Dean supporters for which the overwhelming result was that those contacted were more than happy to still vote for Dean, they just didn't know they could. If any of you would like to participate in calling lists of known Dean supporters in the upcoming states, please let me know straight away.

For those of you that participated in the meetups, it seems that part of the agenda was to build a consensus of which issues mattered most to the members and I would speculate to almost rank them & use that list to target candidates for office to support. That is the idea I had for TruthandHope as well. I think if the motive is similar to what Dean's new organization is planning that is a good thing, as I assume we are all eager to help with his endeavors, but at the same time their method of support may be different than ours. We will not know until the 18th, but perhaps the new PAC will focus on ground efforts, in which case we can focus on media - we're pretty good at it after all! Or their focus may be more state oriented, whereas we can focus on federal elections, or vice-versa. The point is, I would like to build a similar consensus within T&H & continue to move forward, withholding any major changes in focus until after Howard Dean details his plans, so we can be certain of being complementary.

Something else I will throw out there is: would there be support to running anti-Bush ads now or very soon? Certainly we do not have the money to truly compete with the Bush campaign on any actual level, but as a symbol we could begin to send a message exposing his record of "achievement." There will be many 527 & PAC groups supporting Bush & the other GOP candidates, we can be a strong voice of opposition. Hopefully one of many, for we will need a concerted effort to counter their attack machine. They may have the greater fundraising apparatus, but we have truth on our side, getting that message out is the key.

A last thought regarding the delegates push, I am going to add the state of Kansas & Illinois, but the other votes take place after the 18th. It is entirely possible that along with the detailing of his plans, Howard Dean may officially end his campaign on the 18th, perhaps even release his delegates. Having no contact this is pure speculation, but I think it is prudent to be prepared for this. If anyone wants to give to states that come after the 18th put the contribution into the general fund & note in the comments that you would like it applied to a particular state. However should Governor Dean end his campaign & quest for delegates officially, we will apply those funds to creating new media for our efforts moving forward.

Lastly, I cannot legally ask you to or post a link to a bat for DFA. However, they are still trying to pay off the debt from the end of the campaign and I'll just say that I hope that is accomplished soon, it is imperative so they can completely focus on their efforts after March 18, and not have to use new fundraising for old debts.

I deeply appreciate the vast amounts of positive messages and notes that I have received. I wish I could answer them all, as it is I have been up since last evening reading them. I will be flying out this afternoon, but checking emails overnight and ready to buy media if need be tomorrow morning. Keep in mind that when Howard Dean and Roy Neel graciously thanked TruthandHope.Org for their efforts in Vermont, that is not me that is all of us. We could only have done it together - we will continue to make history, this truly is just a beginning.

Eugene on Vermont Win

This has been a banner day. I saw a poll last week that showed Kerry at 60%, Dean at 30% in Vermont (I do not recall which poll). It occurred to me that Vermont must be winnable for Governor Dean, and at the thought I became very excited that he must win a state, must win his home state. It may be little more than a symbol, but we need a positive symbol to set along side those of Iowa, New Hampshire, etc. I talked with people in Vermont and the pervasive theme seemed to be that most simply did not know they could still vote for Dean. Enough media and an incredible ground support would overcome this...maybe. Admittedly I woke up this morning really fearing that he would lose that state as well. Anyhow, once again I am humbled and full of thanks for the efforts of all of you. I wanted so badly for the Governor to win a state, particularly his home state and I know you all felt the same. I don't know how much, if anything we had to do with it, but if we did help it is enough for me personally to give some little bit back for the hope that Governor Dean gave me - a hope I have never had before: that things really could change and that we could really work together to change them.

I have heard that we may have been mentioned on Vermont public radio by Governor Dean. Sadly a side effect of the virus which had overrun my computer systems seems to be that the audio is not functioning, so I could not hear the archive. Also I have heard that we had a "mention" of sorts on CNN? I don't know if Governor Dean is aware of what we are doing and am not worried about his getting our name straight, if what I am told is accurate. I cannot say for certain if he has any awareness, as I cannot and have not had any contact with the campaign or it's employees at any level since we were formed, per FEC guidelines. He has hundreds of thousands of supporters and this has never been about ego or glory for myself or the organization anyway.

What has made this effort work is everyone just doing what they can, whatever form that takes. I just want to do what I can to help him and his message and I know you feel the same. This group is the very essence of what Governor Dean talked about when he said that we have the power. We are proving that daily. The delegates have not come in for the other states, but we have tried where others would not have - that in itself is remarkable.

I have heard (unconfirmed) that this win in Vermont is the first time in history an inactive candidate for President has won a state. If someone could verify or counter this, I would appreciate it. If we have something to do with this - a pure grassroots effort, that is even greater history!

If Governor Dean has bestowed thanks it is to all of us, all of you for making this happen. Without so much tremendous support and help TruthandHope.Org would just be another website floating around irrelevantly.

I would like to hear where you believe we should go from here. Governor Dean is announcing his plans on March 18th. How that will affect us remains to be seen. In the mean time it appears that Edwards has dropped out of the race. There are opposing thoughts as to if this is an open door to win more delegates, or if the point is moot now that a nominee is essentially chosen. Do you feel that we should continue to pursue delegates, given the current situation? We should consider that we apparently failed to win any in states other than Vermont, however the Governor has not stated a position that he would prefer to cease the delegate chase.

We do have media to run, it only takes money to spend and the will to spend it. My will to continue has never changed; then again I will want to fight for Dean delegates even after the convention! Please share your thoughts, so we can determine our next steps together.

Super Tuesday Open Thread
What's going on in your state? Have you heard the ads? Get out and vote for Dean delegates!

I just want to take a moment to thank everyone. We have been pointed to Super Tuesday since Feb. 18, and I think it is remarkable what was accomplished in such a short time. This is even more remarkable when you consider that we are supporting an inactive campaign, and the whole effort from the site here, to the contributions, to the media itself was completely grassroots effort. A lot of groups are using that term, and some of them validly, but I think what we have done epitomizes the name. Governor Dean told us that we have the power, and we have heard that message.

Everyday I receive countless positive messages of support & although I regret not having the time to respond to them all personally, I do read them and am constantly energized & inspired by them. It is humbling to see so much effort and enthusiasm for making a difference, for effecting real change for our country. I know that the time put in, the money contributed is not always easy, it is a real testament to the message we fight for & to the good will of so many. I could not have done this without so much support and help. I wanted to compile a list of people to thank right now, but I literally have to step out in a few minutes and I know that I will forget too many, so that will have to wait.

There's no telling what will happen tomorrow. I am going to go vote for Dean, here in California. Later on there is a gathering I will attend to watch returns with other supporters, because I haven't been able to do such things while working here. If we win delegates in some states, and win Vermont it will be called a resounding success & quite the worthwhile news story. If we fall short of that goal, it will be otherwise considered & largely ignored. Keep in mind that what we are trying has not been done before. Everything about it, the organization, grassroots PAC, grassroots media & an attempt to win votes & delegates for an inactive candidate is all new. We may or may not win tomorrow, but we have made history by trying. I will have no regrets about the time I put in. We should all feel proud for what was done, and for sticking with our beliefs & showing integrity in the face of such adversity. Make no mistake, this is not to diminish expectations, just to point out that the outcome is totally unknown, there is no polling that shows where Dean stands, so we may be disappointed or absolutely amazed. Either way, I am very proud to have & be working with all of you. It is refreshing, humbling & inspiring to work together with so many people willing to take action, and not be tempted to the comfort zones offered by groups that talk rather than work, or who entice us to leave behind our beliefs for the promise of being on a 'winning' campaign. Change of this magnitude will take a long time, but we have continued to work based on the inspiration of Howard Dean that with action & focus, we can effect this change.

So, now that the day is upon us to vote & watch returns, the media is all bought & we are even on television, I thank you not as a meaningless term idly thrown out, but truly I am thankful for all that you do.

Vermont TV Ads

We have raised $1,695 for Vermont TV so far. Just to clarify - $5,000 gets us on the 3 stations morning, midday & early evening. $10,000 buys us some prime time - more than that is more prime time (those spots are $950 - $2,400 each).

The www.aspenwilde.com/dfa.htm is working perfectly for taking donations (as is the blog), and a Vermont TV choice is now on the pulldown menu, but having technical issues in regards to updating the text, thus the totals (I had such an issue here last week as well). Anything that came in last night for VT and the General Fund after we make up the deficit has been allocated to VT-TV. I will be away & unable to send mass emails until Sunday night, but will be checking the individual emails & totals as they come in. I will try to keep the donation portal & blog updated as we raise funds & will let you know where we stand late Sunday night.

Let's get on the primetime airwaves, let's send a real message to Vermont, the voters, the media & the other Dean groups. I encourage you to reach out to other Dean group leaders and members, let them know that we are doing something, not just talking about it & we could use their help!

Here's what we purchased

Vermont:
WVMT, WDEV, WCVT, WVAA, WEZF, WCDV, WZRT - All running from 2/27 - 3/1. These ads are not very expensive & we will have a lot of coverage daily - an average of 8 spots per day per station.

Minnesota:
WCCO - we're running from 2/27 - 3/1. I am told this is absolutely the place to be on the air, which is reflected in the cost. We're on twice a day.

Northern California:
KFOG - We added 2 more spots for 3/1.

Southern California:
XTRA 1150/690 - This is simulcast in Los Angles & San Diego. Highest rated Sportstalk station, good value for the price. We're on 2/27 - 3/1, including a laker game.
KNX 1070 - Major news radio, we're on 3/1 during the afternoon drive time.
KOST 103.5 - Adult Contemporary - Morning Drive & Midday Office listening 2/28 - 3/1.

For those in the Southern California market, you will feel the same as I do that there are so many stations you would have liked to get on. Stations like KFI are running $2,100 per spot. I got the best coverage versus price possible, with the funds available.

I will buy New York tomorrow - was hoping to see more come in. It's an expensive market & $2-3,000 will not go far at all. As for CT, OH, GA, MA, RI & MD - None of these are at $1,500 right now. I feel that it will be necessary to cut a couple out to fund the others. Most polls do not include Dean now so I can gauge how likely 15% is, but if there are any new numbers out that someone could forward me that & how close a state is to $1,500 will make the decision. I would like to finish that up tomorrow, sometimes I can buy same day ads, but not always & to hold on over the weekend to see if a state funds itself may not be the best choice when we can just focus the energy on others.

Beyond that I would love to buy more in Southern California, mix in some San Diego & Spanish stations, but it does take quite a lot.

We have made all the Women for Dean buys, 2 papers in Northern & Southern California respectively. I'll post a link to the final copy when I next update the site.

We could buy a little more in Vermont, I would like to cover Battleboro, but we are also trying to develop something for Vermont television. It's a longshot with time so short, but so is everything we are doing together.

The most important thing I can see is to spread the word about our organization, what we are doing. Please send out the 'open letter' I sent last night as widely as possible. If we could only reach out to the multitude of motivated Dean supporters who are lacking direction right now, we could fund all of these goals easily!

We are going on the air in the Northern California market with KFOG beginning on Wednesday through the Primary. Also we will be running on the Latin station KBRG in the same market, during the same time period. A lot more to follow in the upcoming days!

We are on the air now in Idaho & Utah. A small run like this will hopefully have some effect, as we have hit the largest markets & stations. However, even if the returns tomorrow do not reflect the numbers we would like to see, keep in mind the length of the run was small, but the symbology is great - that we have not gone away, given up hope or been silenced.

On the Air!
We are on the air now and through tomorrow in Idaho on KIDO, KLTB and KXLT in Boise. Also we are on the air on KSL in Salt Lake City now through tomorrow. The Boise buy gives us a good coverage of news, talk and music, while KSL is the highest rated station in SLC and happens to be a news/talk format. I was able to get a discount to run a couple during the big BYU - Air Force game tonight on that station, normally $585 per spot, we got 2 for $510. Thank you to Bill Schultz for creating the ad and funding the balance to get us on the air. Here is the ad which is running:

We are cutting the new nationwide spot today and hopefully I will be able to email it out and post it to the website this afternoon or early evening. There will be English and Spanish versions and we will be running in Northern California perhaps tomorrow, but most likely on Wednesday, due to production time constraints. Also, we will be up in Southern California by the end of the week, hoping for Thursday and I will begin to look into Vermont radio straight away as well. We will run other states immediately as the funds come in!

I changed the hosting server for the site yesterday so it was down for a while. There should not be a problem going forward, but please let me know if it is down. I am not on the homepage except to update things, so I will not generally be aware if there is an issue. The donation portal at www.aspenwilde.com/dfa.htm is hosted separately and should not be affected by our server transition.

If all goes well by the end of business tomorrow we will have a new merchant account to collect funds, rather than paypal. Either way we are looking in to some sort of counter that will graphically represent the donations and goals. I am not going to use a bat, as that is practically or perhaps literally a DFA trademark.

Keep in mind, please, that we are updating the totals manually, so they may not always be as up to date as you would like, but everything is accounted for and we update as much as possible. Typically it is once or twice a day at this point, the overall level of activity is taken into account. If we've raised $800 in 12 hours, it is a lot of work to update the whole page when there is no noticeable difference.

For future reference: A full page USA Today ad is approximately $100,000. That is why we are not running a full page USA Today ad, and are not planning to. I get this request constantly. Although a newspaper may cost little, print ads are not at all inexpensive. Also, they have little effect for what we are doing, people will not read a speech. Voters make decisions based on soundbytes. You are all educated on the issues and the campaign and following things closely, but the average person responds to these 30 and 60 second moments, which is why TV and radio are so effective. Proof of this is the airing of attack ads and Iowa by Gephardt's PAC and the scream speech. All the print ads in the world are not as powerful as those few seconds to the general public - they just cost a whole lot more.

The greatest obstacle I see to TruthandHope's efforts & specifically the efforts to get the word out to voters that they can still vote for Dean and why they should is reaching out to those who are or would be inclined to do so, but do not actively participate on the blog, or other groups. There are many who go so far as the meetups, but do not participate in the web communities. Others who do not even do that due to time constraints, but would be receptive to our message. From here we have had some press recently, and will support the effort with media to the degree that we can afford. Reaching out to new membership is critical - and time short - to both increase our member & potential donor base which will increase our ability to run far reaching media campaigns, and to get the word out regarding the value of their Dean vote. Most of the electorate only knows that Dean has "dropped out" as the media has spun it and thus assume his delegates are released & it is over, rather than "suspended" his campaign & the fight for delegates continues.

A member here in Southern California has sent me an outline of a concept for supporters in their local area to organize & spread the word. I have attached the email & doc outlines for your review. It is not exactly the structure & verbiage I would use, but if nothing else perhaps a starting point for discussion of how we can get the word out. Also, Miles Kurland of www.northbaydean.org has put together an invaluable tool in the form of a customizable flyer. You can view it at http://www.northbaydean.org/delegates/flyer.html. It allows you to input the state name as well as caucus/primary and date for your state. The flyer includes Howard Dean's message to continue to send delegates, as well as a concise statement of why this is important.

I would appreciate your feedback on these matters. Updates (pt. 4): Overnight Open Thread

Eileen Burke from Burlington has created a new logo for the new cause of 'Delegates for Dean' which is available in t-shirts etc. at http://www.cafeshops.com/vermonters4dean. We are looking into doing the same for TruthandHope, which is coinciding with a rebuilding of the website, both in look and content, as the anti-Kerry messages, while still true, are not our current focus. I am looking to create pages of text and links addressing all of the various issues from healthcare to foreign policy to immigration, trade, etc. from the aspect of 'Myth, Truth and Hope' Myth being directly related to the right wings distortion of various issues to keep their base in line as believers, truth being the realities of said issue, and hope being our platform for progressive change that Governor Dean has fought for in regard to that particular issue. These will be backed with links to support such statements. Anyone who has the will or drive to write about any particular issues please let me know. This has been my pet project that I cannot find the time to undertake, with all that has been happening, but it is important to establish our broader appeal based on the cause which Gov. Dean has and does fight for. The media and opposition candidates have taken the focus off the message and put it on the messenger in a negative light, which has brought us to this place. Once America fully embraces the message however, the true messenger will surely follow.

You have probably received a message from the campaign chairs for DFA in your state. The California message has this important note:

We are all asking "what now?" Governor Dean has been explicit. Although his campaign is in suspension, he encourages you to support his candidacy by sending Dean delegates to the convention.

We are going to answer that call!

"There is a groundswell of activity in Vermont. TruthandHope is planning to sponsor radio, print and is looking into television for a campaign to win that state. This will be a 'Thank You to Governor Dean' drive from the people who know him best and he has served so well for so long. John Edwards is not on the ballot in Vermont. There are only 22 delegates up for grabs, so this will not change the outcome of the election. Howard Dean was re-elected 5 times as Vermont Governor, so I believe that these aspects combined make Vermont a winnable state, or at least the opportunity for a strong showing of support for his message. The key is to get the message out there and elsewhere that it is a safe vote, a vote for a platform of progressive change, and that Governor Dean will take these delegates to Boston to fight for us, and then throw his support behind the nominee of the Democratic Party to defeat George W. Bush!

This is perhaps a longshot, but there are opportunities to run reasonably priced television ads in certain markets, Vermont being one. If anyone would like to submit 30 second spots for potential airing on TV in Vermont and other areas please contact me for the guidelines in regards to format, copyright, disclaimer, etc. They will need to be along the lines of our current methodology, in other words no anti-Bush, Kerry or Edwards, just positive messages - perhaps from the voters who intend to do so - of why a vote for Dean still matters, and how it represents a voice for progressive change, and Howard Dean is who will carry those voices to Boston where they will be heard by the nominee of the Democratic Party. There is little time, so I am not seeking funding for television yet, as this may not occur - but we have pulled of some near miracles with fundraising, production and getting on the air these last few weeks, so why not try?"

Let me know what you think. I have finished copy and am with your help developing more to be used as our main ads pieces around the country. There have been offers in LA, Boston, San Francisco, South Lake Tahoe and even Oslo, Norway to produce media with volunteers. The first priority is to get some ads produced, as the logistics in one, some or all of these places allows - English and Spanish versions, so we can get on the air straight away! I encourage ideas and input for this, as well as the scripts themselves. The concept we are selling is unique, in 60 seconds we need to explain why a voter who had heard only that Gov. Dean is out of the race should vote for him anyway. There have been movements to send a message before, but we have a limited time to get that word out. I would like to get on the air in the states next Tuesday, as it is our first opportunity since Governor Dean chose to become inactive in this campaign to make known that we have not gone away and the issues are still what count.

I need some help for these 3 states, with stations and contact numbers.

Thank you all for the tremendous outpourings of support. It is literally near unanimous in favor of our carrying on this fight to secure delegates for the convention. I will reiterate that NONE of the money raised will now or ever go to support Kerry or Edwards. If we ever for any reason considered a change in that stance, because of a Dean endorsement or the end of the primary season we will notify all of you and raise those funds separately, but in the foreseeable future this will definitely not occur, and I personally am not keen on the idea.

When I imagine a Kerry VS Edwards debate, I am inspired to do little more than grab a pillow and a blanket.

We have taken in about $3,000 in the last couple hours, much from first time contributors for a dead candidate. As this grows and we take to the airwaves, it will send a powerful message that Dean's campaign did not go away quietly, and cringe all you like DNC, you will have to listen when the people speak.

As of tomorrow we will be registered with the FEC as a PAC. This will allow us to continue to expressly advocate on behalf of a candidate in a federal election.

TO DO's:

We will need to retool our message on the ads, quickly. The message needs to reflect the new strategy of supporting Dean to support a message. A vote for Dean sends delegates to fight for this message in Boston, and since the party has insisted on supporting candidates who stand for what the polls tell them to stand for the way to make certain that all these Dean inspired promises being made by Kerry and Edwards actually happen is to send a clear message that the party whose nomination they seek supports this platform. Considering how close the last election was, they cannot risk alienating such a large voting block, but without the delegates the voice will be a whisper. This reminds me of Buchanan in 92 running as a protest vote against Bush, because he wanted Republicans to be Republicans and quite raising taxes, etc. He pulled 20-35% across the country. Voters could safely support his protest, while knowing that they could still support the nominee the electable candidate in the general election. It was not long after that the far right took over the party and eight years later they took over the Presidency. We can do the same in the Democratic Party. A vote for Howard Dean is a protest against Democrats who have stopped governing as Democrats and are acting like Republicans. A years worth of stump speeches does not erase the voting record for the last 3 years of Kerry and Edwards. If the voters want to be duped into supporting who the media tells them is electable, but still in their heart support Howard Dean and his movement, this is the opportunity to do both! They can still vote for the nominee, but send a clear message in the interim that they expect a Democrat President to govern like a Democrat.

I am going to work on new ads to this end, and will accept any submissions for potential ads that you wish to send. Admittedly I am a little bitter at having to write a $3,650 check for the ads we just produced - then have to do it all over again. If anyone can conjure up some volunteer or donated efforts to record the new spots that would be a big help, otherwise we will have to pay for the service, as time is of the essence.

Thank you for all of the postings on the blog. Please keep this up. Post on the blog, webgroups, yahoo groups, KOS, changeforamerica (trippi's site) anywhere. Contact the press let them know that we are not going away, that this is an issue driven campaign and the issues are still valid. We do not believe that the leading candidates believe in what they are saying. Let them know that we are not going to line up behind the nominee like good followers. We are not going to form a 3rd party, which can be easily dismissed as a fringe element, denied the opportunity for press or debate. We are taking the Democratic Party back for Democrats and installing a progressive agenda for the good of the country. Howard Dean was and is about changing the country not just Presidents, and that is what we are going to do!

I do not want to suffer through electing a Democrat to the White House and 4 years later having them run for re-election on the platform that we need Healthcare for every American, we need to fix the education system, we need to provide middle class tax relief, we need to support equality of rights, we need to repair our relationships around the world, we need to provide funding for renewable energies, we need to fix our trade agreements, and on and on because they failed to do so in the first term, as has happened for so long! We need to send a clear message that if this is the case they will be a 1 term President, for the party that put them there will not nominate them again. If the platform and the current leadership remains unchecked, all of the Dean inspired rhetoric and promises will once again be unfulfilled and Americans will have more reason to return to cynicism which leads to an administration as the one we have currently taking power.

Because I do not want to suffer through that reality, nor another 4 years of the current administration, I am voting for Howard Dean as President of the United States.

Eugene Hedlund's response to Gov. Dean's Speech Today
Here are some things that I took from his message (what I heard of it, as the networks decided to interrupt for fascinating commentary!): The fight for his message and agenda will continue, and he will form an organization to most likely advertise and campaign for said message in the hope of moving the platform of the Democratic party to a more progressive stance, which supports the needs of average Americans, rather than the maintaining of power for the current establishment. He asked that we not support a 3rd party candidate, adding that he will not seek nor accept the nomination of any 3rd party or as an independent. Most importantly, he noted that he is still on the ballot in every state, and that we should continue to support him in the upcoming primaries and caucuses.

As always, I would like the input of the group as to our direction. Here are my thoughts: First, let me make very clear that we will not give, raise or spend ANY of our money to support Senators Kerry or Edwards. I submit that we consider strongly continuing our efforts to spread the word both one on one and in the media that a vote for Dean helps this cause, this message by sending delegates to Boston who will support our agenda, Governor Dean's agenda. The greater the number, the greater the influence, and the greater the chance of effecting real change in the Democratic Party. I support the above considering forming a 3rd party, as we have a party which is already established, we need only change it's heart and soul ... and leadership. This is a tall order, but the alternative is to go quietly into the night. I would consider making a swift effort to get on the air in Idaho, Utah and Hawaii – if the will and money is there, as well as the logistics. Beyond that, we have begun to raise funds for the Super Tuesday states, which can still be allocated to that effort.

This is my suggestion going forward, that we continue to grow and support this movement, lest it fade and the establishment win. We know full well that the message that has been trumped by the leading Democratic candidates is not truly in their hearts, but if it can become the leading message of the party, if we can send enough delegates to show that Dean's movement is the swing vote which could win the Presidency (remember how close 2000 was) they will have to listen, have to support our platform. I believe this should be our continuing effort, which we can revisit when one of the following happens: Governor Dean officially endorses a candidate for the office of President; Governor Dean or a representative of his organization officially asks us to change our efforts or focus; or the Primary and caucus season ends July 29 in Boston with an official nominee (my birthday, not going to be much of a present it seems!). If one of these events occurs, I affirm that we will not suddenly begin to support the Democratic nominee, as our funds are raised to support Governor Dean's message and carry on his movement only. At the time of such an occurrence, we will as a group decide which direction to take. Beyond that, there are candidates and potential candidates to support in races around the country in the ongoing effort to change the Democratic Party and change America.

My personal intention is that on March 2, I will vote for Howard Dean in the California Primary as my choice for President. After that, I will change my party affiliation, until such time as the Democratic Party supports a platform which I believe in.

Please share your thoughts and feelings regarding TruthandHope's future, so we can build a consensus and move forward.

We will continue to fight for the issues that moved this campaign. We will continue to demand that the DNC adopts our agenda for real and progressive change, not just the rhetoric of change. This organization was inspired by Howard Dean's candidacy and the movement it started. The issues are of paramount importance. Kerry's group would love for us to either line up behind the anointed royal candidate or simply scatter and leave them alone. We must unite to continue to fight on. Petition to DNC
Click here to sign Charlie Grapski's very well worded petition demanding that the DNC refrain from interfering in the primary process by encouraging one or another candidate. It reads, in part,

It is the right of each and every member of the Democratic Party to have their voice heard through their vote in the primary/caucus process and to have a fully representative National Convention convened, being composed of representatives of the diversity of views in the Party through a process of full, fair, timely and equal participation of every member in every state.

It is the responsibility of officials and staff of the Party and the DNC to remain impartial and evenhanded during this process of delegate selection and choosing the nominee. Public and private statements and activities of numerous officials and staff, including in particular Terry McAuliffe and Bill Richardson, have been designed to undermine the process, violate the Charter, and deny the rights of every member of the Party to full, fair, and equal participation and representation in the National Convention, the highest authority of the Democratic Party.

We do hereby call upon the DNC to take this petition and resolution as a formal complaint to the Democratic Party and the DNC and demand that it be immediately taken up under the rules of the Party as required under the Charter for the fair adjudication of disputes.

Thank you to Quintus and Sabrina for bringing this project to my attention and making it a reality!

We did accomplish getting on the air in Nevada, Reno specifically as suggested by people on the ground. We ran on KRNO, KODS and KBZZ leading up to the caucus.

I just returned from London (was supposed to be a 2 week trip...) for the weekend, and anyone who heard from me may have noticed that I was a bit tense. A few reasons for this were that in UK papers full page write-ups about Kerry's intern situation could be found, while I had not noticed much if any US media attention to this issue. Also on Saturday a helpful salesperson told me that NBC had reported that Dean had dropped out of the race. On Sunday I heard this again, that it was reported in Australia. Due to this I found myself interrupting my trip searching out internet cafes to check the news! Also the receipt of funds has slowed dramatically, but I understand that there is a reasonable "wait and see" in regards to the Wisconsin results and more importantly how the Dean campaign reacts.

I hesitate to dwell too much on the issue of what if Gov. Dean drops out on Wednesday, as I need to focus completely on the best case future with all we are doing. However I will state that our intention has always been long term, specifically to create an agenda or platform and assist candidates in state and local elections who support that platform, as well as to lobby the DNC to abandon their status quo power hold and adopt a real platform for progressive change, so the electorate can once again see the difference between democrats and republicans. As to whether we would support the Democratic ticket if Howard Dean is not on it, and to what degree, I will leave to the group in open discussion. Personally I cannot think about such an eventuality until I must, for it is impossible for me to consider a "lesser of two evils" notion while there is a clear choice for good. To that end, I am considering various channels, including meetups, teleconferencing, or a meeting of interested individuals, probably in Southern California (but that is open) to discuss the specific platform or agenda and various methods of pushing for it. It is a pervasive theme in the communications I receive that most everyone wants to continue on this fight, so I felt it prudent to at least express that such is our complete intention. For now however, I will be watching and hoping that the Wisconsin result, if not a surprising victory, is at least another log on the fire to keep Gov. Dean's campaign going, because anything can still happen. Only just over a month ago Kerry could hardly muster 10% support in any state which was polling, so while the Governor's campaign continues, we will have the singular focus of assisting however we may in the efforts to secure his nomination and will continue to allocate the funds raised to air media in the states chosen by the contributors.

I have heard reports that the Kerry and Edwards camps have run media against us on some (perhaps all?) of the radio stations which we have targeted. This proves that we are making a difference, that it has an effect, otherwise they would ignore us.

DVDs
There is a group burning DVDs & VHS tapes & distributing them on the ground to undecided Wisconsin voters. They are not DFA, totally grassroots, but are lacking funds to get their media out. I agreed to post a button to help them, it is "DVD/VHS duplication." The 18 minute video they are handing out can be viewed here

It takes a long while to open, so the synopsis is that it is various parts of Dean's 'Women's issues' speech in NH, the Diane Sawyer interview, the ABC's mea culpa, and some other stump footage.

They need $1,000 - so if it overfunds I will put the rest into Wisconsin. We are not otherwise affiliated with this group, so I cannot speak from any direct knowledge of their actions.

Updates, pt. 3: Wisconsin, DC, and Nevada

"Another issue is Wisconsin in general. The vast majority of people in the group and in Wisconsin have asked us to run ads in that state. I know there is an idea that we should supplement the DFA ads by running in states they are not, but the overriding feeling is that although Dean has said he will not quit the campaign, he has also stated that it would be essentially done, so the imaginary line in the sand still exists, and we must pull out all the stops.

I have heard that DC is winnable, so we have gone ahead and purchased media on WOL, a highly recommended station. It will run beginning Friday from 6am through Saturday at 3pm, once per hour. Hopefully we can find the funds to fulfill that buy. I feel that a win, any win will be a good boost going into Wisconsin. If the funds are there and the slots open up, we would like to buy time tomorrow on that station as well.

Please forward me any other recommendations for Wisconsin stations, I need to make buys tomorrow morning. I will be on a flight from tomorrow afternoon, and will probably have another update Friday morning. We will contract with the stations tomorrow for our buys and send them more money to increase the buys, as it comes in from there.

I highly suggest focusing on Wisconsin and DC tonight to prepare for the prelimary buys tomorrow. Does anyone have polling data or feedback for Nevada? Is there a strong will to go into Nevada? I would love to hear from those who have contributed to it's fund, because as of now I am intending to run spots there.

I sure do appreciate everyone's efforts and good will. Today someone noticed my Dean sticker and asked why I don't drop it and support the party so we can beat Bush. I told him that I refuse to choose between the lesser of two evils when there is still a choice for good.

Update from Eugene (pt. 2), On the New Radio Ads
Eugene writes,
"In response to some concerns regarding our current ads. I spent the last 2 days weighing the concerns about “negativity” in the ads, which I personally do not feel is much, and have tried to discern if this is a widespread belief or a vocal few. I have spoken at length with members around the country, but in particular members of this group and others on the ground in Wisconsin, which were the deciding factor. Overwhelmingly the people I spoke to on the ground in Wisconsin supported our new spots, and questioned why I thought they were negative at all - which I do not. However, I was ready to run only the old spots, had that been the consensus. I receive submissions all day of various radio ideas, many or most extremely negative, but others focused on a particular issue. The majority of the feedback I have had is that the voters are familiar with Governor Dean's record, so reiterating that will not help. Dean is their first choice already, but fear drives them to support Kerry. When the analogy of Senator Dole was brought up to us, it made heads turn and brought up a specific recent memory in everyone's mind. This is the kind of thing someone can grasp in 60 seconds, an “oh yeah, I hadn't thought of that” moment. The analogy is very strong. I do not feel it does, nor would I intend in any way to make a negative commentary on Senator Dole. The commentary refers to the electability issue, and how a candidate with such a profile fares, during a long general election. I have heard on television that voters are not enthusiastic or passionate about their support of Kerry, but feel it is a safe haven. As a Republican at the time, I can clearly state that this was the exact same feeling that permeated our party in 1996. Pat Buchanan was the maverick, the candidate with energy, the one who would really change things if elected (not a commentary on his politics, just a statement of the facts as they were at the time), but after his New Hampshire win, the media and party quickly mobilized to bring his campaign down. Obviously Gov. Dean is no Pat Buchanan, but Sen. Kerry is a Bob Dole, in that the fear of real change, for good or ill, has once again mobilized a party and the media to tear down a campaign and throw its support behind an old loyal “party guy” with what seemed like a good resume at the time. Once the nomination had been won and the realization set in as to who the candidate was, the energy began to wane. There is a reason that he had not won the nomination before, and a reason that Kerry has failed in previous bids. That reason will become clear, but too late, and this simple analogy may unlock some memories and begin to create the fear that Kerry is unelectable. I hope. Anyhow, those are my thoughts."

"I apologize for the delay in getting any updates out today. This has been an especially hectic day. I appreciate that everyone understands that I cannot reply to each email anymore, but I do read all of them and appreciate the input. Often a suggestion is implemented after some consideration with others, so please continue. We hired an attorney full time today, so that the structural issues of the organization are proper moving forward and all FEC papers filed promptly. Also, we are developing concepts for television, as well as considering future radio spots. If things are as 'full steam ahead' as expected, after a big showing in Wisconsin we will look into possibly hiring some support staff to aid in timely updates and responses, as well as media purchase follow-up and coordination. I hesitate to incur fixed expenses, as the desire is clearly to pour as much of the monies as possible into our media buys. That said, I have set up a 'general fund' button, the funds from which will go to cover these expenses, as well as merchant account fees (2.9% at this point, 2.45% with our new relationship). There is no particular goal with this fund, and any overages will go to covering states where some additional funds would make a difference in the buy, for example Virginia was about $500 short of it's goal, so I used some of my initial funding to cover it, rather than try and squeeze the extra out when we had already made the buy.

A couple valid questions have arisen: One being if I would go ahead and list all of the states on Super Tuesday, which I have. I am concerned with diluting the funds too much, but am always willing to conduct buys wherever the will of the group lies. The second being what happens if the campaign ends abruptly before those states have their primaries. Our intention is to run media in accordance with our vast desire to see Governor Dean elected President, but this is a possible reality, therefore I have created this disclaimer to be placed at the donation portal:

'Any contribution to TruthandHope.Org's fundraising campaign to deliver media in support of Governor Howard Dean's Presidential nomination will be allocated to run such media in the state(s) directed by the contributor, as can be reasonably accomplished. The caveat to this being if 1) The state fails to achieve a minimum $1,500 contribution threshold, in such a case the funds will be allocated to media buys in other states as needed. 2) If Governor Dean ends his Presidential candidacy, the funds will revert to the general account to fund future projects and/or media buys intended to support other candidates and/or issues as deemed proper by the membership in TruthandHope.Org.'

Any feedback on these issues is welcome. The organization was founded with the long term goal of furthering the effort which Governor Dean's campaign has inspired us to, that being to fundamentally change the political landscape of America. Our central focus right now is the Presidential campaign itself, as Governor Dean is no longer the frontrunner. However, after that no matter the outcome the principles on which he has run will remain true and valid, thus the fight to find and support candidates and issues akin to this platform will continue."

Help Needed
Eugene writes,
"Here are some areas that I could use help immediately:

1) Now that we are growing, the Dean campaign is continuing and we are exploring television, I would like to speak with an attorney who is hopefully sympathetic to our cause and an expert in FEC regulations and structures of organizations such as this. This is due to these facts: I am considering forming a PAC in addition to the 527 for increased flexibility in some areas of advertising and fundraising. The advice and opinions of my corporate attorneys while being valuable, are in dissent with each other. Also, the people at the FEC who have stated that we are in compliance cannot give advice as to our structural changes as we grow. My corporate counsel does not specialize in groups such as this, and I feel it is prudent to work with one person who is going forward.

2) I need an accountant, now that this is clearly going to be a larger and longer term operation.

The closer to Southern California the better or perhaps necessity for these two. Certainly I can find such help here straight away, but it made sense to me to place the inquiry to the group, so as to try and locate someone who understands and supports our cause.

3) I need station names and contact persons for the radio stations in the markets we are moving into next. Once again, I will rely on the opinions of the people on the ground in those areas for initial direction, then make decisions based on price, availability and coverage, after speaking with those agents. This formula has worked quite will so far.

4) We will be incurring a significant cost for the website before long, especially as the group grows, the site's pages grow (a significant revision and improvement is in the works) and the multimedia aspects are increased. If anyone can lend advice and/or support in finding either a preferable host, or ultimately our own server and support that would be a huge help.

5)In the future, I may need logistical help here in the office. I would much rather work with people directly associated with our group and its mission than hire outside help.

6) On a strictly personal note, if anyone is working in the travel industry & could help me with a couple of things, please let me know.

I think that covers everything right now. As always, I appreciate and am humbled by your incredible support and enthusiasm. I have taken a couple media calls, nothing major, but the word is getting out. Now I am trying to find ways to delegate some things, or acquire greater aid, so that I can focus on our advertising buys and developments.

I deeply appreciate all of your thoughts, ideas, words and notes of encouragement and support. They keep me going on this end more than you know. You should all take tremendous pride in taking a stand for what is right, fighting for your country and doing something, rather than just saying something.

Totals and Moving On
Eugene sent out a long update earlier this afternoon, which I am dividing into two posts

We are only a few hundred dollars off from VA, so I am taking it down & using general fund money to make up the difference.

I am adding Northern California, Southern California, New York, Massachusetts and 'AA Media Outreach' for now, based on specific requests from fundraisers with contributors available in those specific areas. BTW, 'AA Media Outreach' is a fund for ads specifically target to the African American community, beginning in Wisconsin & going on from there. The group coordinating the media is developing a series of print & radio ads for that purpose.

We are currently developing 2 new radio spots. Once the finished product is available, I will post it on the website. Also, there are a couple television spots that are being explored right now, I will keep you up to date with that as it progresses.

Many of you have been hearing our ads on WTOP in Virginia. I have culled the following responses from Blog for America this morning:

I voted for Howard Dean this morning. I've never been so happy or so proud to vote for any candidate in my life.

I worked at my polling place for a little while this morning (no other campaign had signs or a presence - woo hoo!) and now that I'm done with teaching for the day I'm headed back there.

I've had two friends call me on my cell phone and say they heard the TruthandHope.org ads on WTOP today -- neither of them had heard of the group and wanted to know the whole story about how the ads got on the air. They both said they thought they were really good because they differentiated Dean from Kerry without being overly negative and focusing on Dean's strengths rather than Kerry's weaknesses.

There is never a perfect buy, but I think WTOP is a great purchase. This was quite an accomplishment to get on the air the same or next day, without any prior contact or relationship with the stations. I had to overnight checks or even wire transfer the money to some, because we are a new advertiser trying to get on last second. Also, when placing time like this, often we have to pay a 'bump rate' because the time is already sold. It was challenging to get on the air at all, many places were booked & would not budge, but I feel this is a good coverage for our money, using a system like I used in Washington.

We know for absolute certain that nearly 30 - 50% of voters in the various states are making up their minds on the last day or two. With these ads we can help to dismiss some of the fear tactics of the Kerry campaign & the media establishment. These ads help to remind people why they supported Howard Dean first, why he is still their first choice & that if everyone will vote how they want, rather than what they have been told, than we can & will win!

On another note briefly, there have been many great suggestions about posting notices about our movement in various circles, yahoo, kos, etc. I would implore you to do so at will yourselves. Unfortunately with success, comes a great deal less time for me to advertise myself. I need you to help spread the word. We will continue to grow & make a difference.

Dean is not dropping out after Wisconsin!

Democrat Howard Dean said on Monday even if he loses Wisconsin's Feb. 17 primary he will remain in the race for his party's 2004 presidential nomination.

"It's critical," Dean said when asked about the importance of the contest. But, he added, "It's not going to be the end of the line."

Asked if he would drop out if he lost Wisconsin as he had said he would just last week, Dean said, "No." Asked if he was in it for the long haul, he said, "Yup."

Oh, and lest we forget... Virginia $15,055.74 - Only $1,595.26 till we fill Virginia & close it out. After that I will send a manifest of where we are running ads!

For Tennessee we need $6,100 to fill the order, which covers 5 stations based in Nashville & Memphis.

I will detail the orders more specifically later, but wanted to rush this update out. When Tennessee is full, I am going to close it off & have us concentrate on Virginia.

Before anyone asks, no the Maine money is not included, we had a generous donor contribute $5,000 to Virginia's cause!

I will be purchasing media today with these figures. Any additional monies that come in for Tennessee & Virginia up through noon PST will be included in the buy.

At that point we will cut off TN & VA, and add DC & NV to the mix. Most people indicated they would like to run ads in those states, so I will post a link and let the money make the decision.

I have had a lot of positive feedback for WTOP in Virginia. Let me lay out what is possible with that station: We can run from 5a - 10a tomorrow, the ads are $2,200 per. From 10a - 3p ads are $1,000 per. We cannot get on the air today with WTOP.

Their coverage is 590,900 18+ in VA, 65,830 in DC. Most emails seem to point out that this is the station to listen to, even the most popular in cabs, the next being NPR. NPR does not accept election ads.

I prefer to have the group's thoughts drive the purchases, but here are some of my thoughts:

This sounds like a great station to buy on, the only down side being the expenditure. You do often get what you pay for in radio as most things. In Seattle we ran ads as high as $700 - $1000 per, and had a great deal of positiv feedback. That said, I have some calls in to stations that cover central VA as well. I think it is good to have some voice in most of the state if possible. We could do a less expensive run in central/southern VA and dump the rest into WTOP. That rest may not go far with the funds we have, however. From what I understand WTOP is a big station to listen to in DC. We have had plenty of calls to run ads in DC, so this is an opportunity to get some coverage there as well.

Most all the feedback regarding Maine's carryover is to put it into Wisconsin, as that is our most important battleground state. In particular the people on the ground in Maine wished this, so I have said I would do so.

Please send me your thoughts on these matters, and if WTOP is the target let's get the word out & drive the Virginia funds up - which will help DC too!

Welcome to the unofficial blog of TruthandHope.org. Inspired by Dr. Howard Dean's presidential campaign, Eugene Hedlund founded TruthandHope.org as a 527 group to challenge the Democratic Party establishment's resistance to change. Our mission is to form a cohesive voting block in order to influence not only the Presidential election, but also local and state elections throughout the country. We seek to develop and run advertising campaigns promoting Democratic candidates with backbone and tenacity, and to propagate the message of hope that Governor Dean brings with his plans to rebuild our party and our country.
